Challenge

Wheelchairs bring the gift of mobility to millions of disabled individuals—until rough terrain gets in the way. But what if we could grant chair-bound people the freedom to move around as they please, regardless of nature’s conditions?

Several mechanical engineers at MIT put their minds together to create an all-terrain wheelchair. Their original model is remarkable for its usability and affordability. Two manual levers propel the chair and its occupant across even the most rugged landscape.

The group formed a company called GRIT (Global Research and Innovation Technology) and currently manufactures the acclaimed Leveraged Freedom Chair (LFC). We partnered with GRIT to conduct an exploratory project, envisioning a new iteration of the LFC design.
